Done. 30 years. I need to have about a thousand euros every month ready. Too many years into the “AI revolution” where I’m told every week by influencers that my job is obsolete and that in a couple of years the whole economy will crumble. Where I’m told that work as a whole will be a remnant of the past. 30 years. I don’t know where I’ll be a year from now, but sure, I’ll have the money ready each month.
I thought you become fully adult when you become a parent, but perhaps you become one when you take an obligation like this. Responsibility. I always wondered how people sleep at night when they have such obligations hanging on their necks, but I wonder no more, because I have become those people and I sleep pretty well. The only thing that wakes me up earlier than I would want (4:30 AM today) is the excitement to write, which is why, dear reader, you are reading this article.
That is to say, nothing has really changed. That is to say, I’ve realized that the alternatives don’t really exist. The alternative is to remain renting and have nothing and live on other people’s terms, live in tolerance of the drawbacks that are always there. The kitchen made of elements of junkyard quality which is also made for dwarfs from Snow White. The neighbors waking me up at 3 am walking in high heels after a night out, even after accepting the complaint from us and sympathizing, or acting sympathetic, to be more precise. The dogs. The neighbors in the building that don’t say hello back. Not knowing when you’ll be thrown out.
No. The goal is to live in our dream house, built just for us, in a much nicer place, with the kitchen that we’ll design to suit our needs. And if doubling the price of the current rent is the price for that, so be it. I think we can handle it and the bank seems to agree.
The goal is to have a place of our own. Something we can really call home. Some place that will ground us, where we can put down roots, where we won’t have to think about moving out. We call the current place home, of course, but it doesn’t feel right, since we don’t own it. Owning something is alluring. We found that out when we bought the plot of land. When we started removing branches and bushes and trees and planting flowers. When we started our own fires. When we built a small garden and started watering it. I never played it, but it’s like Minecraft, in real life. You can just do things. You can make decisions without asking anyone’s permission for the things you own and this has been really refreshing after so many years of renting. We want to do that more.
